Setup two computer network without router! (Cross-over/bridge setup)

So are you cheap!  A college student who hates spending money!  Or even worse has no money!  Ok this is a easy way to setup a two computer network.

Here’s the case, you have an old clunky desktop and you bought a brank new laptop, and you’re wondering what to do with your desktop.  So you get the bright idea of having a server, or putting music on it, or w/e your fancy is!  Ok… 90% chance linux is going on that sucker… well this is a windows tut.. so sorry!  But ready anyway if you want since the hardware side is pretty much the same!

So basically you need the following to do this:

– High speed internet
– Modem with IP Passthrough (optional)
– Two NIC cards
– Cross over cable

This first paragraph is for those who want to host a server! So skip if you’re just interesting in having internet on both.

First step is to go ahead and enter you modem setup.  You can do this by entering your gateway IP into IE or FF.  If you don’t know your IP go into command prompt (Run>CMD [enter]) then enter ipconfig and write down your gateway IP.  Now that you have your IP go into advance/expert mode and setup IP Passthrough to your server, which you SHOULD be using to do this all!!  After that let the connection restart and try to get online with your server, and it should be all good to go!  Btw setting up your server isn’t covered in this post, sorry!

Now to become ghetto!  First step is to take your cross over cable, which if you don’t have one, make one or buy one.  I made mine!  Google up how, it’s not hard, just a pain with those small wires and you need the crimping tools.  NEVER USE SELF CRIMP!  Sorry just that those things are cheap, come appart and are a waste of money!  Just buy a stupid cable instead of dealing with that junk.

Now simply plug in your cross over from the one computer with the connection (your desktop most likely, unless you have one hooked up notebook or you’re wierd and using an extenrnal ethernet port….) Anyway, once you connect the cross over from the second NIC to the other unit go back to the computer with two NICs and go into your network devices.  Now highlight both and right click and hit bridge!  Wait a while for the thing to go through, then after that check your connection on the main computer and if it works, great!  After that go onto the notebook or w/e the second unit is, and check the connection.  You should be up and running!

As you can tell it’s probably a lot easier then using a router, but I personally prefer the router since I don’t have to worry about the another computer handling all my IP request.
